Katiann Nelson
Katiann Nelson is a mezzo-soprano and pianist originally from Waterford, Wisconsin, and based in Boulder, Colorado. After graduating from Carthage College with her bachelor’s degree in Vocal Music Education, and clarinet and piano performance, Katiann moved to Boulder Colorado, where she is earning her Master’s Degree in Voice Performance at CU-Boulder, studying under Abigail Nims. While in Kenosha, Katiann experienced several musically formative opportunities- as a pianist, her highlights include soloing with the Carthage Philharmonic Orchestra on Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto in C# minor, playing as a Collaborative Piano fellow with the Kenosha Opera Festival, and working at Interlochen Center for the Arts for two summers in the High School Opera division as a collaborative pianist. Focusing her career on her voice, Katiann has performed with the Eklund Opera Program as Meg in Falstaff, and Taller Daughter in Proving Up, (and looks forward to her upcoming role as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel), as well as performing with the Boulder Bach Festival in Handel’s Messiah.
As a multidisciplinary musician, Katiann’s pedagogy values well-roundedness, longevity, and passion for the multi-faceted nature of music. Music is for everyone, regardless of age or experience! Of special interest to Katiann’s teaching and studying is highlighting the works of underrepresented composers– and ensuring that all students feel themselves represented by the repertoire they perform.
