How it works

What adult learning looks like here

No recital pressure, no rigid schedules. Just you, an instructor who knows how adults learn, and the music you've always wanted to play.

Flexible scheduling

Lessons are scheduled directly with your instructor around your work and life, not around a school calendar.

Online options available

Can't always make it to the Dairy Arts Center? Many instructors teach online with no drop in quality.

Taught by working musicians

Your teacher is a performer and expert in their instrument who genuinely loves working with adult students.

No pressure to perform

Adult recitals and happy hours exist and are encouraged, but they're entirely optional.

Common questions

Will I be in class with kids?

Private lessons are just you and your instructor. Adult social events are adult-only. The choir includes high school students but is adult-led.

What if I haven't played in 20 years?

We love this. Returning adult students often progress faster than beginners. Just tell us where you left off.

Do I have to perform in a recital?

Not at all. Recitals and happy hours are available and encouraged, but completely optional for adult students.

What instruments can I study?

Piano, voice, guitar, violin, cello, winds, brass, percussion, and more. If we have a faculty member for it, you can study it.

Can I do online lessons?

Yes. Many instructors teach online, and the experience is excellent for most instruments. Ask us when you reach out.

How do I get started?

101 practice tips

As an adult student I greatly enjoy my interactions with my teacher. Her approach is more collaborative than prescriptive. While I'm getting lots of help with my technique, we also discuss the structure of the music and share thoughts about repertoire in general, reinforced by some basic harmony theory my teacher has taught me along the way.
