Katie Markus
Kaitlyn (Katie) Markus (she/her) is a mezzo-soprano, pianist, and teaching artist based in Boulder, Colorado. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she studies with Professor Abigail Nims and serves as Assistant Opera Director with Eklund Opera.
Katie has taught voice and piano for over ten years in private studios, community arts programs, and pre-professional training environments. Before relocating to Boulder, she taught at Grand Rapids Voice Collective, a collaborative studio focused on supporting singers’ individual strengths and encouraging artistic exploration. Katie brings that perspective to her teaching, which spans classical, musical theatre, jazz, and contemporary styles. She is passionate about helping students develop efficient technique, strong musicianship, and confidence in their unique artistic voice. As both a pedagogy-focused graduate student and active pianist, Katie incorporates evidence-informed vocal practice, accessible musicianship training, play-based learning, and wellness-centered approaches into every lesson.
Alongside her teaching, Katie performs in opera, musical theatre, and concert work. She has appeared with Eklund Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Ballet, Chick Corea Jazz Combo, and the Vox GR Professional Choral Ensemble, and has participated in young artist programs such as the Taos Opera Institute and the Trentino Music Festival in Italy. Favorite roles include Rona Lisa Peretti (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Mrs. De Rocher (cover, Dead Man Walking), and Zweite Dame (Die Zauberflöte). Whether guiding new pianists, coaching singers for auditions, or preparing students for performances, Katie fosters a warm, encouraging, and highly individualized learning environment.
A graduate of Grand Valley State University, Katie holds a BA in Voice and Piano and has been active in both classical and contemporary performance scenes throughout Colorado and West Michigan. Outside of teaching and performing, she enjoys traveling, baking sourdough bread, and sneaking treats to the neighborhood cats.
